Semi-Gloss at Encounter (Los Angeles)
Given the love and attention lavished upon Stereolab, Luna
and Ivy,
its a little surprising that Semi-Gloss continues to fly
below the
pop-culture radar. Perhaps its just a matter of record
company muscle
all three of those bands visibly benefited from major-label
support,
while this New York quartet's self-titled 1997 debut just
sorta slipped
out on NYCs tiny Dirt Records. Certainly, the Semi-Gloss
folks come
from a similar place: drawing heavily on the two-chord
drones and
rhythmic surges of the early Velvets, French-born vocalist/keyboardist
Verena Weisendanger croons like Nico's blissed-out little
sister,
pitting subtle organ melodies against Jordy Mokriski's
heavenly guitar
jangle and Gregory Graf's loping bass lines. Currently
in town to work
on their second record, the band will be trying out some
new material
in the appropriately groovy setting of LAX's Encounter
restaurant. Have
a cocktail, watch the planes come and go, and feel the
ice in your
heart begin to thaw. (Dan Epstein)
Option Magazine 7/8/97, p.126
"Gliding between watercolor ballads and bright indie pop, Semi-Gloss's
noteworthy debut defies easy description....there's a fun accessibility
at
work here that makes Semi-Gloss more approachable than most
[Velvet Underground]-derived bands..."
